Scott Kaz is a longstanding contemporary artist based in Los Angeles.
Statement: Almost forty years ago (in my early thirties) I experienced something while visiting the Anselm Kiefer retrospective at MOCA Los Angeles. I made a decision to be an artist while having an aesthetic experience; it was more than just attending and looking, even seeing the artwork. An aesthetic experience is a psychological process that involves focusing on the beauty of an object (or nature) and is quite different from everyday experience. I experienced the Kiefer exhibit personally in such a way that my life changed.
My work is an effort to absorb myself in the process and to discover meaning in this process of creating. There is a dialogue between the developing artwork and the developing self. Art is what you may find in the artwork itself, but also what you find and who you find within yourself. Art is a dialogue between the object itself and the artist's intended presentation. Art is also a dialogue between what the artist's intentions and what the viewer experiences. Art at times can be sublime.
